Kyren Lacy, known for his time as a wide receiver at Louisiana State University, has passed away. The NFL draft hopeful was found dead in Houston early Sunday (April 13) after an alleged incident the night before, multiple reports. He was 24.
TMZ reports that Lacy is believed to have died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound following a police chase. Authorities say the incident began around 11:15 p.m. Saturday after Lacy and a woman’s family member allegedly got into a verbal altercation with her. She reportedly told a 911 responder that Kyren allegedly fired a gun into the ground during the dispute and then left the scene. Police later attempted to pull him over, but Lacy allegedly drove off. That’s what allegedly led to a police pursuit before the 24-year-old then crashed his vehicle. When officers approached the car, they allegedly found him dead inside from “what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound,” according to TMZ. A gun was also recovered from inside the car.
Lacy’s death came just hours before he was scheduled to appear before a grand jury. He was facing multiple charges in connection with a fatal hit-and-run crash that occurred in December 2024. Lacy was accused of causing a collision that killed a 78-year-old man named Herman Hall. He allegedly fled the crash site scene but turned himself into authorities in January amid a live arrest warrant. His charges included negligent homicide, felony hit-and-run, and reckless operation of a vehicle. He was released after making his $151,000 bail.
Days after the December incident, Lacy announced his decision to enter the 2025 NFL Draft. He played three seasons at LSU and led the team in receiving touchdowns in his final year.
News of Lacy’s death prompted an outpouring of grief from the Louisiana State University community and beyond.
“We’re saddened to learn of the tragic passing of former LSU football student-athlete Kyren Lacy,” LSU said in a statement, according to ESPN. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones, as well as his former teammates and coaches impacted by his passing.”
