It has been quite the week for the Arenas family, but things are looking up after the latest update! Last week, Alijah Arenas was involved in a terrifying car crash in Los Angeles that resulted in an induced coma. Since then, the young athlete has returned home to continue his recovery. And let’s say his parents, Gilbert Arenas and Laura Govan, made sure his homecoming was one he would remember!
On Thursday, May 1, Gilbert and Laura hit up Instagram with a joint post that had us all in our feelings. The video showed the 18-year-old strolling through the corridor, headed to his bedroom, unaware of the surprise waiting for him.
Alijah’s bedroom was decked out to celebrate his release from the hospital. Gilbert didn’t hold back in the caption either, pouring out gratitude to the good Samaritans, Bryant, Jose, and Robert, who pulled his son from the wreckage. He wrote, “Alijah can’t wait to meet you guys.”
He also gave a major shout-out to everyone who held it down with prayers and love during Alijah’s recovery. But y’all know Gilbert had to sprinkle in some humor, quoting Alijah, who once told his friends: “If I’m ever in a coma, don’t bring flowers. Bust in rapping ‘I might swerve, bend that corner, woah’ by Gelo like it’s the national anthem.” And then he added, “Because nothing screams perfect timing like saying ‘Swerve on that corner, woah’… right after you actually did. Into a tree. Into a hospital stay.”
The Roomies hopped in the comments section of TSR’s post after seeing Alijah Arenas for the first time since his accident. Here’s what some of them had to say…
@aprnbeauty wrote, “He still got the hospital band on, you can tell he just wants to rest. Nice gesture from his dad !”
@rebel_in_town wrote, “Look at God.. glad to see him moving around.”

The USC student was driving his Tesla Cybertruck from the gym early Thursday (April 24) morning when he lost control, smashing into a fire hydrant and a tree. As The Shade Room previously reported, the crash was so severe that it caused Alijah’s car to catch fire. That’s when bystanders Bryant, Jose, and Robert stepped in and pulled him out just in time. However, the smoke inhalation did damage, and the doctors placed him in an induced coma. By Friday, April 25, Alijah was out of the coma. By day three, he was already walking and talking. He was officially released on April 30 to continue his recovery from smoke inhalation in the comfort of his home.
