A French mother named Sandrine Pissarra has received a sentence for starving her 13-year-old daughter, Amandine, to death.
PEOPLE reports Sandrine Pissarra received a life sentence with a minimum of 20 years in prison for the death of her daughter. A French court shared the ruling on Friday, Jan. 24. Amandine, who stood 5’1″ and weighed just 62 pounds, died on Aug. 6, 2020, after enduring severe abuse. The teen passed away in the village of Montblanc, located southwest of Montpellier.
Medical reports revealed Amandine had a swollen face, missing teeth, infected wounds, and hair loss when she passed. Authorities also discovered that Amandine had been locked in a storage room for weeks, deprived of food, leading to extreme weight and muscle loss, and eventually septicemia, per Metro.
According to PEOPLE, on the day Amandine died, Sandrine Pissarra stated that she had been suffering from eating disorders. Pissarra also claimed Amandine only ate sugar, fruit purée, and a protein drink before vomiting and losing her breath. Ultimately, Pissarra admitted in court that she abused her daughter because she resembled her father, referring to herself as a “monstrous mother.”
Sandrine Pissarra has been held in custody since May 2021. Metro adds that Pissarra is also a mother to eight children from three different previous relationships and she also reportedly ran a nail salon.
A psychiatric evaluation described Sandrine Pissarra as angry and violent. Additionally, the evaluation highlighted how she projected her hatred for Amandine’s father onto her daughter, according to France 24. Subsequently, prosecutors charged her with acts of torture and cruelty against her teenage daughter.
Pissarra’s ex-partner, Jean-Michel Cros, has also received a 20-year prison sentence without parole for his role in Amandine’s suffering while under his joint care. In her closing statement in court, Sandrine Pissarra apologized to all of her children. “I want to apologize to my children, that’s all.”
