Which Outdoor Furniture Material Is Right for Your Space

About

Outdoor Leisure Chair comes in many different varieties, styles and materials. Most homeowners set out to purchase furniture that is built to last, looks fresh for years to come and is easy to maintain. In order to make the best decisions when buying outdoor furniture, take into account the area you live, and where you are planning to place the sets. Some materials are more resistant to wind and rain, while others fare better in the heat of the sunshine. Other factors that are not often considered are the maneuverability and weight of the piece. With so much to consider, let’s start with the basics and talk a little about the main materials of outdoor furniture so you can make educated decisions for your property.

Aluminium

Cast aluminium is a metal that has gone through a process known as casting. It is created when a method such as mould casting is used to temper the aluminium for use with the creation of many different types of outdoor products.

Castings made from aluminium are corrosion resistant. This quality allows garden furniture manufacturers to produce many items of outdoor furniture, including tables and chairs, that won’t rust, even giving their metal nature. The finished products have the benefit of a longer lifetime ensuring the consumer usually receives value for money.

Another great benefit of this material is that it will not rust and is durable enough to withstand the diversity of the weather, particularly an onslaught of rain.

Minimal maintenance is required for cast aluminium furniture. Besides cleaning occasionally, there tends to be no need for upkeep. Whilst it is lightweight enough to be easily moved, cast aluminium furniture is also heavy and sturdy enough to feel stable and not blow around when it is windy, making it a popular material for many homeowners.

Plastic resin

How about bringing in a colourful look to your balcony? Consider man-made synthetic materials such as plastic resin to achieve a playful look, just as in this image.

This material is light in weight, stain-resistant, UV-resistant, maintenance-free and resistant to mould or mildew. It is affordable, can be stacked and can easily be moulded into any shape or size. Plastic resin can be made to replicate wood, wicker and so on, but the material is not as durable as steel, aluminium or iron furniture.

Rattan and Wicker

The terms rattan and wicker are sometimes used interchangeably, but they actually describe different things. Rattan is the natural vine often used to make the furniture, and wicker is the weaving technique used for centuries. The weave makes for lightweight, comfortable furniture that can be used outdoors or indoors for a country or coastal look. While some natural wicker furniture has been treated with UV inhibitors, natural wicker is susceptible to the elements and can fade in the sun. All-weather wicker looks similar to natural wicker, but its use and care are vastly different. All-weather wicker is made by wrapping an aluminum frame with a weave of synthetic fibers coated with a weather-resistant finish. It can be exposed to rain and harsh elements with no ill effects and is resistant to fading. Basically, it’s the ultimate in outdoor style and durability. Remove dirt regularly with the soft brush attachment on your vacuum cleaner and wipe away spills immediately. Wash with mild detergent and rinse with water, allowing to dry completely before using or storing. Natural wicker may require additional weatherproofing every few years. Shield wicker from direct sunlight whenever possible, and store it in a protected area during inclement weather. For all-weather wicker furniture, simply clean with mild detergent and rinse with a hose.

Wood

Some types of wood, such as teak, jarrah, and shorea, can last for up to 50 years, but they do require some intensive upkeep. Other woods, such as cedar and pressure-treated pine, are also very durable to outdoor elements, but they need to be treated, painted, or sealed to maintain its durability. It's also recommended that you move wood furniture inside once the winter season rolls in, as this will help withstand harsh conditions.
