Dawn Robinson shocked her supporters this week when she opened up about her current living situation. The En Vogue singer admitted to using her car as a shelter for the last three years. Thousands of roommates and other social media users across platforms reacted to her vulnerable video. Less than a day after her viral admission, rapper Slim Thug weighed in. But WHAT he said seems to be causing a lil’ commotion in the comments.
If you’re too young to know, let’s put you on game! Robinson was THAT R&B GIRL from when she stepped on the scene in the late 80s until the early 2000s. Throughout her career, she’s been nominated for eight Grammy Awards, performed on national and international stages, and appeared in several iconic shows, from ‘In Living Color’ to ‘Soul Train,’ per VIBE. A recognizable voice and household popularity, Dawn Robinson had that IT factor.
Those same accolades are what Slim Thug made reference to in a circulating video. He implied that after Dawn’s run in the music industry, there’s no way she should be unhoused.
“That En Vogue chick living out her car. Never should she do that. Look at them hits she made. Out them hits, she should still be making enough money to pay some rent around this b***h. I get a monthly check every month…if them people own they sh*t, they would be able to pay for something with that check,” the rapper stated.
Slim Thug then went into the politics of artists owning their masters and what limitations they should be putting on labels. “It should be five years and then take your sh*t back. Ain’t no way that they can’t get their money back in 5 years,” he added.
In her living situation video, Dawn Robinson explained that she moved in with her parents in 2020. However, that situation quickly soured. The En Vogue artist said she felt like her mother was talking her frustrations out on her. Eventually, that led to her moving out and temporarily staying at a hotel in Los Angeles. As the costs kept adding up and her manager seemed to be leaving her for dead, Dawn said she decided to try car living. However, she clarified that her support system remains strong, from her brother to her ex-partner’s mother. Still, car living has allowed her to feel “free.”
“I felt free. I was so free. I felt like, ‘Wow, this is so different.’ I felt like I was on a camping trip, and I felt like this was the right thing to do. I don’t regret it,” Robinson said.
Ultimately, she assured fans that she wasn’t seeking sympathy but wanted to be transparent about her growth journey.
After The Shade Room reposted Slim Thug’s reaction to Dawn’s reveal, the roommates flooded the comment section with nearly 8,000 written reactions. Some are sounding OFF on him for seemingly being insensitive and others are continuing to send Dawn Robinson love during this time.
