Chance Zane Chavez, a 34-year-old Texas man, has been charged after allegedly beating his wife, 32-year-old Kristen Chavez, to death with a clothing iron.
According to the Houston Police Department, on March 12, around 7:20 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on reports of a “suspicious event.” When they arrived, they reportedly found Chance “standing in the doorway with his hands up.” Furthermore, the department notes that the 34-year-old “had blood on his arms, legs and clothing.”
At that point, officers secured Chance into a police car. Then, they searched the home for additional occupants and to see if anyone was injured. Ultimately, they found Kristen “unresponsive in a bedroom.”
“She had suffered blunt force trauma to her body and was pronounced deceased by paramedics,” the police department’s release asserts.
Per the police, Chance was subsequently arrested, charged, and booked into Harris County Jail. On March 13, he was officially charged with his wife’s murder.
“Even though it was not a good situation, [she was] staying in it, hoping that things will change,” Kristin’s mother, Laura Bell, reportedly told the press, per New York Post. “We’re hoping that he remains in jail until the trial and throughout the trial for him to be held accountable for what he’s done.”
According to the outlet, before his fatal attack on his wife, Chance stole her four dogs the night before and abandoned them on a highway. As of March 16, one of the dogs had yet to be found.
Per PEOPLE, Chance’s bond was increased from $250,000 to $500,000 on Monday, March 17.
