For 25 years, the internet knew her only as a name on a tape — a shadow in one of music’s darkest scandals. Now, Reshona Landfair is finally stepping into the light. The girl once called “Jane Doe” in R. Kelly’s child pornography case is reclaiming her story, her name, and her life in her first-ever interview and memoir, proving she is more than what the world saw.
In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Reshona Landfair shares how decades ago, she was just a spunky, pint-sized rapper in Chicago hip-hop group 4 the Cause, touring Europe and performing covers of hits like ‘Stand By Me.’ Music ran in her family: her aunt Sparkle was a rising R&B star, her father a professional guitarist, and her mother a gospel singer. But at 14, her life was hijacked by R. Kelly, the man she once called her godfather, whose illegal tape turned her into a public tragedy she never asked to be part of. For years, she even shortened her name to “Chon” just to navigate daily life without whispers following her.
Now in her early forties, Landfair is reclaiming her narrative with fierce clarity. Sitting in a bright Chicago studio, she reflects on her memoir, ‘Who’s Watching Shorty? Reclaiming Myself from the Shame of R. Kelly’s Abuse,’ and the decades she spent living as the girl the world wouldn’t name. “There’s no job that I can apply for where this isn’t the forefront of my life,” she tells Rolling Stone. “Once I realized that I didn’t have peace or privacy [by hiding], I had to take ownership.”
As previously reported, Kelly’s crimes have been heavily documented in recent years. Decades of coercion, abuse, and videotaping minors, ended in federal convictions in 2021 and 2022. But for Landfair, the real story has always been her survival. “I just really wanted to capture the fact that I was a human being,” she says. “I had dreams and aspirations [and] was not just the ‘R. Kelly girl.’” After years of being silenced, hidden as “Jane Doe,” she’s taking the mic at last, while owning her truth and her name.
Recently, Reginae Carter’s ‘Heir Time’ podcast dropped a new episode featuring R. Kelly’s daughter Buku Abi, and things got real when she addressed the rumors about her relationship with her dad. Looking straight into the camera, Abi set the record straight: she loves her father and holds no animosity toward him, even while acknowledging the family has been through a lot and accountability is necessary. Naturally, fans flooded the comment section with mixed reactions — some praising her honesty, others debating how love and accountability can coexist — proving that family tea in the spotlight never goes unnoticed.
