A community is facing an unimaginable tragedy after a shocking incident unfolded at an elementary school in Bend, Oregon. As authorities work to piece together what happened and account for those impacted, heartbreaking details are emerging about the lives lost and the moments that followed. Here’s what officials have shared so far about the devastating situation.
According to authorities, three children, ages 5, 8, and 11, and a teacher were reportedly killed in Thursday’s shooting at Silver Rail Elementary School in Bend, Oregon. The suspected shooter, who was 16 years old, was also found dead inside the school when police arrived, Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said. Officials reported that another child and a teacher were transported to the hospital following the incident. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain under investigation as authorities continue working to establish a clearer picture of what took place.
Bend Police Chief Mike Krantz said a community member pursued the suspected shooter into the school and shot him. Earlier reports from authorities indicated that officers received a call at 12:59 p.m. about a shot fired into a vehicle outside the school before additional emergency calls came from inside the building. Police arrived within minutes, and the suspected shooter was shot and went down inside the school shortly afterward. Initial reports did not immediately establish who fired the shot that brought the suspect down, but subsequent information from Krantz identified a community member as the person who confronted him.
Following reports of gunfire, Silver Rail Elementary was placed under lockdown as law enforcement and emergency personnel responded. Authorities began moving through the school room by room to evacuate students and staff safely. During an earlier media briefing, police spokesperson Sheila Miller described the situation as devastating. She also claimed it was the kind of incident the community never wanted to experience.
“We’re in the process at this time of going room by room and evacuating each of the people who are in that school. This is the kind of thing we never want to see happen in Bend. It’s devastating,” Miller shared.
The shooting has left Bend reeling as authorities continue investigating. Meanwhile, the community is mourning the devastating loss. Officials initially cautioned that the number of fatalities was preliminary as emergency crews worked at the scene. Authorities have confirmed that the suspected shooter died inside the school. Moreover, another child and a teacher were transported to the hospital. Additional details about the victims, the circumstances leading up to the shooting, and the ongoing investigation had not yet been fully established in the initial reports.
