Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett is clearing the air after being accused of ableist comments toward Governor Greg Abbott. In a recent speech at a charity event, Crockett referred to her state’s leader as “Governor Hot Wheels.” Since then, conservatives have been going IN on her, given that Abbott is wheelchair-bound. However, her latest response to the backlash seems to be giving unfazed energy.
As mentioned, Jasmine spoke at an annual dinner hosted by the Human Rights Campaign on Saturday (March 22). At one point, the Dallas Democrat spoke on the state of migration relations in Texas and called out the Republican for his role in it.
“You all know we got Gov. Hot Wheels down there. Come on, now,” Crockett said about Abbott. “And the only thing hot about him is that he is a hot-a*s mess, honey.”
Abbott was partially paralyzed in 1984 after a tree fell on him while he was running, per the Associated Press. The accident severely damaged Abbott’s spinal cord. Abbott, now 67, was elected in 2014. Multiple Republicans came forward to call out Representative Jasmine Crockett, including Texas Senator John Cornyn, who called her comments “shameful.”

While conservatives tussled with Jasmine Crockett’s comments, some supporters called out hypocrisy in the outrage. They’ve cited Abbott’s support for President Donald Trump, who went viral in 2015 for mocking a uniquely abled journalist.
Mad about Jasmine Crockett calling him Governor Hot Wheels…
yet laughed about this…

Rep. Jasmine Crockett made this distinction herself while clapping back at critics in a social media post on Tuesday. She clarified that calling Gov. Greg Abbott “Hot Wheels” was not a jab at his inability to walk. It was a jab at his political decision to flood other cities with immigrants entering through Texas.
“I wasn’t thinking about the governor’s condition—I was thinking about the planes, trains, and automobiles he used to transfer migrants into communities led by Black mayors, deliberately stoking tension and fear among the most vulnerable. Literally, the next line I said was that he was a ‘Hot A** Mess,’ referencing his terrible policies. At no point did I mention or allude to his condition. So, I’m even more appalled that the very people who unequivocally support Trump—a man known for racially insensitive nicknames and mocking those with disabilities—are now outraged,” the Dallas rep wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on March 25.
She added, “Keep that same energy for all people, not just your political adversaries. Finally, this is yet another distraction. Instead of obsessing over and hanging on to my every word, maybe my political foes should focus on doing the work of the people who elected us to improve their lives.”

According to The Texas Tribune, the state has spent more than $148 million busing over 102,000 people around the U.S. Crockett shared a link to said article in her final response on X.
Meanwhile, Abbott’s office did not immediately reply to requests for comment from the Associated Press. He also hasn’t addressed Jasmine Crockett on social media. Days before her “Hot Wheels” comment, the representative also retweeted a post from a comedian critiquing Greg Abbott. The retweet was shared on her personal X page, @JasmineForUS. The post from comedian Stacy called out Abbott for “rolling up” to the White House in support of the dismantlement of the Department of Education.
Rolling up to the White House to cheer on the president destroying the agency that makes sure kids in wheelchairs have equal access to education is wild https://t.co/tvsHLhpCPq

Crockett has also been criticized by Republicans for suggesting last week that tech billionaire Elon Musk needs to “be taken down.” Elon is in charge of the Trump administration’s Department of Government Efficiency, which has caused a series of layoffs, firings, and department closures across the federal government in recent weeks.
Rather than calling in folks like Elon and the rest who are out here actively threatening our democracy, these Republicans on the DOGE Subcommittee on Oversight decided that attacking our public broadcasters was a hill to die on.
