"You can't save everyone, Jacob." New Europe Film Sales has unveiled a festival promo trailer for the indie western film titled
A Prayer for the Dying, marking the feature debut of Norwegian-American filmmaker Dara Van Dusen. This film is premiering at the 2026 Berlin Film Festival starting this week in Berlin. Not a remake, based on the book of the same name, and not the same as the 1987 British film also titled
A Prayer for the Dying with Mickey Rourke. This brand new film is set in 1870 in Friendship – a small Wisconsin town, made up of Scandinavian settlers, is still suffering from the repercussions of the recent Civil War. So when faced with a new and even deadlier threat, one man is forced to make a harrowing choice: save his young family or defend the community that gave him a second chance at life and meaning.
A Prayer for the Dying is described as "powerful account of the choices we must make when disaster strikes and everything we hold dear, including faith, family and community, is shaken to its very core." Starring
Johnny Flynn as Jacob Hansen,
John C. Reilly as Doc, with
Kristine Kujath Thorp,
Gustav Lindh,
Hilton Pelser, &
Andrew Whipp. Based on Stewart O'Nan's
novel though this almost seems like an
Eddington remake, too. //
