Authorities are reportedly investigating after a Navy fighter jet crashed into San Diego Bay.
According to Fox News, the crash occurred near Naval Air Station North Island on Wednesday, February 12, around 10:16 a.m.
“The plane hit the water, and there was an explosion. A lot of black plumes, and then it just like got sucked into the water. Within 15 seconds, there was nothing,” one witness told CBS 8 San Diego.
Per the outlet, the Navy confirmed that two pilots were onboard the fighter jet. However, both ejected themselves from the craft after it experienced “a mechanical failure.”
“Moments later, the aircraft crashed into the bay. The Premier, which was in the immediate vicinity, swiftly responded to the emergency,” H&M Landing, the fishing company which rescued the pilots from the water, asserted to Fox News in a statement. Furthermore, the company’s general manager, Frank Ursitti, added he was thankful its vessel had been “in the right place at the right time.”
Per the outlet, the pilots were then “transferred to U.S. Customs and Border Patrol Air and Marine Operations.” Afterward, they were reportedly taken to the University of California San Diego Hillcrest Medical Center, per NBC News.
Fox News adds that the pilots have not been publicly identified. However, they are in stable condition.
