From the United States to the Dominican Republic to the Bahamas, the violence, collective scapegoating, and mass deportation of Haitians lay bare a particular kind of anti-Blackness. Anti-Haitianism not only denies the humanity of Haitians, but originates in tandem with the West’s fears of independent Black states, which were realized first in the Western Hemisphere after the Haitian Revolution.
