Whew, Roommates… life can change in the blink of an eye, even when everything feels aligned and the future looks mapped out. This week, Anthony Joshua broke his silence and opened up about the Nigeria crash that completely shifted his world. And…his words are hitting hard.
As reported, a devastating car crash in Nigeria claimed the lives of two of Anthony Joshua’s closest friends. The former two-time heavyweight champion shared an emotional video to social media on Thursday. In the clip, he reflects on the tragic incident that occurred on December 29 near Lagos, Nigeria, which killed Sina Ghami and Latif ‘Latz’ Ayodele.
In the video, Joshua revealed that the group had just been together in Miami and were planning out the rest of 2025 before everything changed. “We went back home, went to see our families and everything just got flipped up on its head,” he said. Holding back tears, Joshua spoke about the pain of losing not just friends, but brothers who played major roles in his life.
“Not even did their parents, uncles, cousins, friends and myself lose two great men — we lost people that we dearly care about.”
Joshua, 36, acknowledged the weight of public scrutiny while choosing to grieve privately. “I’m not going to sit here and show all of my emotions,” he explained. Joshua added that despite outside judgment, he knows what he feels and understands his purpose moving forward. In the video’s caption, Joshua admitted the message “took a few attempts” to record.
The boxing star also shared a deeply spiritual reflection on loss. Joshua said he’s found comfort in believing his friends are still with him in another way. “One day my time will come, and I’m not scared… It’s actually comforting I’ve got two brothers on the other side,” Joshua said. He described them as his “left and right,” adding, “I was walking with giants that kept me protected.”
Joshua went on to thank supporters around the world for the overwhelming love shown to his late friends. He also vowed to help fulfill their dreams and support their families. “Even though they may not be here in the physical… spiritually they’re going to aid me through,” he said. Also, Joshua emphasized that it will take strength beyond the physical to keep going.
Following the crash, Joshua has been taking time away from the spotlight to recover both physically and emotionally. His longtime promoter, Eddie Hearn, recently shared that the boxer will be moving at his own pace as he processes the tragedy, saying Joshua “will take his time to get back on track.” For now, Joshua appears focused on honoring his friends’ legacy, leaning on faith, family, and his close-knit circle as he navigates this painful chapter.
