Every year, cinephiles wake up early for the announcement from France of the films playing at the Cannes Film Festival. For the
78th Cannes Film Festival taking place this May, they have revealed an intriguing selection of exciting films, featuring new works from well-established filmmakers (they love them), as well as some first-timers including a young French woman for Opening Night. Cannes is continuing in its usual spot in late May, running from
May 13th to 24th, kicking things off with the highly anticipated
Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning sequel with Tom Cruise returning (he was also at the festival in 2022 for
Top Gun: Maverick). Just over a month to go until the fest begins on the Mediterranean coast. The
selection last year included many exceptional films that went on to dominate the Academy Awards - including
Anora,
Flow, and
Emilia Perez. This year I'm looking forward to watching
Eddington,
Alpha,
The History of Sound,
Sentimental Value,
Eleanor the Great, and many others. The current total is
50 films so far. As usual, last minute additions will come later because it's quite light with ~15 missing. Check the list of
2025 films below. //
