R. Kelly has reportedly doubled down on his plea to be temporarily released from prison following a recent overdose and hospitalization.
According to Page Six, Kelly was placed in solitary confinement against his will on June 10.
“He takes medication for anxiety and to help him sleep, in addition to other medications,” Beau B. Brindley explained in recently filed court documents. “While in solitary confinement, prison staff approached him, and he showed them the medications in his possession… [Prison staff] provided him with additional medication and instructions to take it. Mr. Kelly took the medication as directed. This was on June 12, 2025…”
On the morning of June 13, Kelly reportedly awoke feeling “faint” and “dizzy.”
“He started to see black spots in his vision. Mr. Kelly tried to get up, but fell to the ground. He crawled to the door of the cell and lost consciousness. He was placed on a gurney,” the lawyer explained, adding that the singer was ultimately taken from the Federal Correctional Institute in Burham, North Carolina, to Duke University Hospital in Durham, North Carolina.
Per the singer’s lawyer, Kelly was told at the hospital that he had been “administered an overdose quantity of his medications that threatened his life.” Furthermore, he was treated at the hospital over the weekend and then released back to the facility.
In addition, Kelly’s legal team asserted that prison staff took the singer off his blood thinner medication and are refusing to allow him to undergo surgery to clear the clots in his lungs and legs.
“It is undeniable. Mr. Kelly’s life is in jeopardy right now because the Bureau of Prisons denied him necessary surgery to clear clots from his lungs. He could die from this condition, and they are letting it happen,” the lawyer added in the court filing.
Due to this, Brindley is continuing to ask for Kelly to be released to home confinement.
“This is the behavior of an abuser and a master manipulator on display an abuser and a master manipulator on display,” prosecutors on his case reportedly said of his legal team’s defense.
Social media users reacted to R. Kelly’s reported overdose, hospitalization, and prison request in The Shade Room’s comment section.
According to Page Six, the singer was convicted of sexually abusing minors in September 2021. Out of the nine counts against him, some included “racketeering and violations of the Mann Act.” In June of 2022, Kelly was sentenced to 30 years in prison. Per the NY Post, in 2022, Kelly was also convicted of similar crimes in a separate case. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison, with 19 to serve concurrently with his current sentence.
Furthermore, the outlet adds that last week, the singer’s legal team requested he be released from prison to house arrest. They alleged an inmate had been approached about killing the singer. Ultimately, Kelly’s lawyers even mentioned their desire for President Trump to pardon the singer while sharing their plea for Kelly’s release with the public.
