A 14-year-old girl from Louisiana reportedly faces charges after allegedly murdering her newborn. Authorities have not disclosed the young girl’s name.
On Friday, Nov. 21, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office received a report from a local hospital that a 14-year-old girl was seeking medical treatment after reportedly giving birth at home. Officers responded to her Denham Springs, Louisiana, residence and found out that she had allegedly hidden the baby in a tote bag. When emergency responders opened the tote, they discovered the infant inside, deceased, with severe neck injuries. In a Facebook statement, Sheriff Jason Ard said authorities believe the baby was born healthy but was murdered right after delivery. He also said officials think the teen tried to keep her pregnancy a secret from her family.
“Medical Personnel believe the infant was carried to full term, born alive and killed immediately after birth. It is believed the teen did conceal her pregnancy from family,” Sheriff Ard explain.
Additionally, Sheriff Ard said the case has been tough on all the first responders involved. He also asked people to keep the young girl’s family in their prayers as the investigation continues. “Please keep them – and, the family – in your thoughts as this very sensitive investigation continues. Due to the nature of this case, no further details can be released at this time.”
Officers arrested the teen and initially charged her with failure to seek assistance and obstruction of justice. However, PEOPLE reports that authorities charged her with first-degree murder. The decision was made after authorities later ruled the newborn’s death as a homicide.
As of now, authorities have booked the teen, and she remains in Florida Parishes Juvenile Detention Center. Officials have not share details about a court date or whether she has hired a lawyer. Her guardian and close relatives have also not spoken out about the situation.
