U4N Notes on the R-4 Hyena Reload Bug in Helldivers 2

About

The R-4 Hyena currently asks a little more from the player than most weapons in Helldivers 2. Its incendiary marksman design can be useful when you want accurate fire from a safer distance, but its reload bug can create a serious ammunition problem. Players choosing Helldivers 2 Items for a difficult operation should understand this weakness before depending on the rifle for an entire mission.

The current Helldivers 2 Items meta is not really the issue here. The problem is specific to how the R-4 Hyena handles its reload sequence. Arrowhead has acknowledged the behavior as a known issue, with interrupted reloads potentially causing magazines to disappear from the reserve. A player can therefore make a perfectly reasonable decision in combat and still end up losing ammunition because the animation was interrupted.

The Empty Magazine Is the Main Problem

The safest way to understand the bug is to separate normal reloads from empty reloads.

When there is still ammunition in the magazine, the reload can use a shorter sequence. When the magazine is empty, the rifle goes through an additional part of its reload animation.

That longer process creates more opportunities for something to go wrong. A rocket explosion, a Terminid attack, a dive, sprinting, weapon swapping, or another reload input can interrupt the animation.

The result can be much worse than simply having to wait another second before firing. Your reserve ammunition can be reduced incorrectly, leaving you without the magazines you expected to have.

Do Not Wait for Zero

For this reason, early reloading is probably the best habit to develop with the Hyena.

If possible, leave one round in the magazine before reloading. This lets you avoid the problematic racking stage and gives you a shorter reload animation.

The difference may seem small during an easy encounter, but it becomes much more valuable when the battlefield gets crowded. A shorter reload means fewer seconds where an enemy can knock you out of position.

It also gives you more control over when you are vulnerable. Instead of being forced to reload because the rifle has completely run dry, you can choose a quiet moment between enemy waves.

Find Cover Before a Full Reload

When the magazine is already empty, do not rush the reload.

If you are fighting Automatons, check for rockets and other explosive attacks before starting the animation. Against Terminids, make sure you are not about to be hit by bile or another attack that can rag-doll you.

Cover is extremely valuable here. Even a short retreat behind solid terrain can give you enough time to complete the reload without being interrupted.

Once you begin, commit to the animation. Do not sprint, dive, switch weapons, or repeatedly press reload unless you need to react to an immediate threat. If you can safely finish the reload, doing so is usually better than trying to cancel it.

Faster Reloads Can Reduce the Risk

Siege Ready armor is worth considering for players who frequently use the Hyena. Its reload-speed benefit does not eliminate the bug, but it shortens the time you spend performing the reload.

That gives enemies less time to interfere with the process. It can also make early reloads feel less disruptive because the rifle returns to action more quickly.

The passive is therefore better viewed as a practical workaround rather than a solution. The underlying problem still needs to be fixed by the developers.

Build Around Controlled Shooting

Attachment choices can help as well.

The Short Magazine offers a 10-round capacity while improving ergonomics. Some players may prefer the handling improvement, especially if they use the rifle in medium-range engagements where quick movement and accurate follow-up shots matter.

Removing high-magnification optics is another possible adjustment. A simpler setup can make the rifle easier to handle and encourage more controlled shooting.

You do not need to copy one specific build. The important part is making the weapon comfortable enough that you are not constantly wasting ammunition or performing rushed reloads.

Play Around the Bug

The R-4 Hyena does not have to be abandoned while the reload issue remains. Players simply need to treat its ammunition cycle differently from a normal rifle. Early reloads, safe positioning, and patience during empty reloads can prevent many of the situations that cause the reserve magazines to disappear.

For players who want Helldivers 2 Medals, understanding how to keep a weapon functioning during difficult missions is ultimately more useful than rushing through every reload. Until the developers release a fix, careful reload timing is the most practical way to keep the R-4 Hyena reliable.
